Three of the franchise’s actors are teaming up for the gritty drama.

Star Trek: Voyager’s beloved Kathryn Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew, will star in an upcoming crime drama for Ireland's national public service broadcaster, RTE, titled The Yank. The series focuses on a New York City detective, Nora Savage, who moves to Ireland’s beautiful west coast with her family.

However, Mulgrew isn’t the only Star Trek alum starring in The Yank. The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine’s Colm Meaney plus Strange New Worlds’ Cillian O'Sullivan have also been cast. Meaney will star alongside Mulgrew, but it’s unclear if his character is friend or foe. Meanwhile, SNW’s Dr. Roger Korby (O’Sullivan) was listed among a handful of other cast members.

The Yank’s synopsis reveals Savage (Mulgrew) makes the move to Ireland after facing a “traumatic event,” which swayed her to take a break from detective work. However, Mulgrew’s character is “unexpectedly” drawn into a murder investigation “involving a female climate activist.” Mulgrew said of The Yank (per Deadline):

The Yank was borne out of my love for Ireland, and the luck and perspicacity I have enjoyed when it came to knowing who will matter to me both emotionally and creatively. That person is Eithne Verling, and the character we contrived is Nora Savage – a woman very like myself, had I been slashed with grief, blessed with raw courage and born a natural hunter of that which destroys. The Yank is the intriguing and unexpected story of a woman who has nothing to lose, and her obsessive attraction to what lies beneath.”

Mulgrew reprised her role as Voyager’s Kathryn Janeway in both seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy. And The Yank’s writer, Eithne Verling, developed the teleplay for the Trek icon following “a chance meeting” while Mulgrew was on vacation in the Irish harbor city of Galway. John Connors, India Mullen, and Jack Rowan will also star in the series.

An official release date hasn’t been set for The Yank at the time of this writing. However, as a lifelong Trekkie, I can’t wait to see if Mulgrew is teaming up with her Star Trek alum to solve the murder investigation, or if Meaney is portraying the killer. I'm a huge fan of Miles O’Brien in both TNG and DS9, but I’d love to see Meaney play the villain, rather than a hero, this time around — since he's a Meaney, not a meanie on Trek.
