It’s been over 30 years since Star Trek: Voyager introduced Captain Kathryn Janeway, the first female lead for the franchise. Actress Kate Mulgrew excelled as the tough commander and later reprised the role in the animated Star Trek: Prodigy series, as both Hologram Janeway and Admiral Janeway. With many Star Trek projects in the works, fans are naturally hopeful Mulgrew can star in one herself.
At the New York City premiere for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Mulgrew spoke with TrekNews.net on the blue carpet and spoke about the possibility of Admiral Janeway returning in her own series. Mulgrew summed up how she was just an actor, not a creator. Mulgrew said:
"You know, they seem to be chatting, but we'll see what the chat's about [...] Is it a hard yes? Well, I'm an actor, I'm a hired gun. I mean, now we'll talk about this when somebody says, 'Make me an offer.' You know what I mean?"
Many fans will agree with Mulgrew’s view, as picking up on Janeway today would be interesting. It’d also be a great way to reintroduce more Voyager characters, especially with Chakotay and The Doctor playing such big roles in the animated Prodigy.
The last time Mulgrew portrayed the character, Admiral Janeway saw off the new USS Prodigy on an exciting training mission in the series finale of Prodigy, with Hologram Janeway aboard to help the crew of youngsters explore strange new worlds.
There is so much potential, and Janeway is one legacy character deserving of a revival series. Star Trek Voyager is streaming on Paramount+, and Star Trek: Prodigy is available on the usual digital platforms to buy or rent.
