2. Marla’s reasons

In The Original Series “Space Seed” episode, Marla falling for Khan and turning on her crewmates seemed sudden, but the campfire scene in this installment of the Khan podcast provides more justification for her actions.

Marla claims she felt invisible on the USS Enterprise, with Captain Kirk not even knowing her name, while Khan knows every one of his followers intimately. It’s clear Marla was drawn to Khan not just for his looks or charisma, but for how he loved his freedom. She also wanted to be part of history rather than simply study it.

Their talk is excellent, thanks to the actors, as it notes bits like Khan never wanting to use chemical weapons, a reveal that came after a joke at Ivan's expense for passing gas following dinner, and being more honorable than other tyrants. Khan's still a proud man who seems to enjoy the verbal jousting with Marla. On screen, the sparks between the future lovers would have likely been as red-hot as the campfire itself.
