Star Trek: Khan 'Magical Thinking' needs to be adapted into a TV episode (and this is why)

Marla’s phaser, the Ceti eel queen, and Khan and Marla’s wedding make “Magical Thinking” a natural fit for a visual Star Trek story.

3. Marla kills the Ceti eel queen with her phaser

The confrontation with the Ceti eel queen is the episode’s clearest argument for an on-screen adaptation. Ursula deduces that the eels operate within a hive-like structure and that a queen must be behind the growing danger. Khan leads an expedition into the jungle to find it, but the group is quickly overwhelmed.

That is when Marla, who Khan urged to stay behind in order to protect her, steps in. Marla comes out of nowhere, surprising everyone, particularly Ivan. Marla uses her phaser to kill the Ceti eel queen, saving Khan and the rest of the group when the situation turns against them.

This moment would be suspenseful on television without needing to become excessively graphic. More importantly, it gives Marla agency at a key point in the story. Khan leads the mission, but Marla’s quick thinking and Starfleet training ultimately make the difference. It is a strong reminder that the colony’s survival cannot rest on Khan alone.
