5. 'Do Your Worst' (Episode 3)
There’s a terrific theme in this episode about the burdens of command. It’s there in the mention of Sulu lowering the shields on his ship so the striking meteors mimic rain as a distraction. It’s there in Khan dealing with the challenges of his new world and the growing threat of the Ceti eels. And it’s there in the fascinating parallel between Khan and Kirk in how neither accepts a “no-win scenario," even when it causes more trouble.
The major storytelling touch is the Ceti eels having infected one of the younger Augments, Richter. We know the effects the eels have on people, meaning it's even scarier when Khan doesn't realize what he's dealing with.
Khan’s choice to kill Richter, in order to learn more about the eels' effects on his people through an autopsy, pushes him closer to the edge, even as another of the younger Augments, Paolo, learns Ceti Alpha VI is unstable after increasing the range on McGiver's dynoscanner. The story's tension adds to the thrills. It’s not as action-driven, but it’s still a key episode.
