4. 'Magical Thinking' (Episode 4)

Of all the episodes, this is the one that humanizes Khan the most. In mourning the loss of a friend, he and Marla bond through an excellent discussion of the human need to believe in a higher power to process loss.

Trek rarely tackles the question of faith so directly and doesn't choose one side as "correct," instead respecting each person's beliefs. Khan’s memorial for his friend, Joaquin, with his “I grieve with you” mantra shows his true heart, which makes his fate even sadder.

The bigger touches are Khan and Marla taking the monumental step to get married. There’s also a thrilling fight against the massive queen of the Ceti eels, where Marla proves herself to Khan by using her phaser to kill the creature. In many ways, it’s the show's last dose of happiness, and it provides a view of Khan that is very different from what fans initially believed, while still doing justice to the character.
