"Is [SPOILER] about to enter his Locutus era? Maybe.”

Resistance is futile once again, fellow Trekkies. It doesn’t seem that long ago since the new comic book series Star Trek: The Last Starship began its run in September 2025. Six issues in, though, things are about to heat up considerably for the 12-issue title’s reimagining of James T. Kirk — and it looks like the beloved character is about to boldly go Borg! Senior Group Editor of IDW, Heather Antos, said in an interview with IGN:

"Is Kirk is about to enter his Locutus era? Maybe. Is that the least terrifying thing that could possibly be in store for the crew of the USS Omega? Most definitely. It's time to enter Deep Space Hope -- where a group of scientists turned cultists make the crisis of The Burn feel like problems of the past.”

The Last Starship #8 is the issue that will up the stakes for Kirk, and it will once again be written by the Star Trek comic book team of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. However, a new artist, Hernan Gonzalez, is the one creating the horrific and unforgettable imagery of the Borg/Kirk.

In the same interview, Kelly revealed that “cosmic horror” was the next logical — thank you, Mr. Spock — step for the upcoming storyline of The Last Starship to take. I’m a huge fan of the Borg and have been ever since Q (John de Lancie) introduced the crew of the Enterprise-D to their most dangerous threat during season 2 of The Next Generation.

However, in my humble opinion, Kirk encountering the Borg is a creative idea worthy of exploration not only in comics but in television and/or film. Can you imagine the number of Trekkies who would flood cinemas to see Captain Kirk transformed into part of the collective? Paramount Skydance, I hope you’re listening.

The threat begins in the brand-new Last Starship storyline, which launches with issue No. 7 on Wednesday, May 20. However, look for the Borg/Kirk drama to unfold and pay off in The Last Starship No. 8. And share your thoughts with us about the cool comic book Star Trek mashup on the Redshirts Always Die X and Facebook pages. Check out the story’s synopsis below:

“The crew of the USS Omega are desperately trying to hold the Federation’s vision of a united Galaxy together, but they’re failing. The spirit of cooperation is dead, but Starfleet’s mission might not be, thanks to a research station on the aptly named Deep Space Hope. There, one last shining ray of possibility remains in an ever-darkening universe. A way to put everything back in its rightful place…if only Sato and his crew are bold enough to seize it.”

Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
