Despite its vast array of characters, the role-playing game sets sail on its final voyage.
Star Trek fans who enjoy gaming won’t be happy to learn that one title won’t be around this fall when the beloved science fiction franchise officially celebrates its 60th anniversary. Unfortunately, an announcement was recently posted to the digital platform Steam, which revealed the Star Trek: Legends role-playing game (RPG) is being decommissioned in September.
The release (per Steam) reads as follows: “Captains, every mission must eventually reach its final frontier […] Today, we are sharing the difficult news that Star Trek: Legends will be sunset. As part of this process, Star Trek: Legends will no longer be available to download from digital storefronts beginning August 20, 2026.”
The announcement, which was posted under the recent events and announcements section located on Steam, continues as follows:
“Players who have already downloaded the game before this date will still be able to play until September 3, 2026, when the game will officially be taken offline and will no longer be playable. We want to sincerely thank every player who has joined us on this voyage. Your support, passion, feedback, and dedication over the years have meant the world to our team.”
Despite Star Trek: Legends including most of the franchise's fan-favorite characters (from Captain Kirk to Lt. Commander Data to Seven of Nine) when it was released in 2024, the RPG simply never found its footing in the gaming community.
Of the 249 reviews posted on Steam, reactions to Legends has been mixed at best over the last two years with an alarming 39 percent of players negatively responding to the Emerald City Games and Tilting Point title. In fact, over the last 30 days, an overwhelming 79 percent of the reviews shared have been negative.
Personally, I hate to see any Star Trek game go the way of Old Yeller, especially when 61 percent of players did enjoy exploring the Nexus with their favorite characters. For die-hard Trekkies, Trekkers, and gamers, the extinction of Legends will undoubtedly go down as a significant loss.
After all, where else can fans witness landing parties featuring Star Trek icons Dr. McCoy (The Original Series), Worf (The Next Generation), and The Doctor (Voyager) exploring strange new worlds together?
