Star Trek actress Leslie Parrish dies at the age of 90. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter revealed in its own obituary, which was published today (Sunday, Aug. 23) that Parrish actually “died late last year.” However, a cause of death was not revealed.

Fans of the beloved science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry will always fondly remember Parrish for her role as Lt. Carolyn Palamas in The Original Series season 2 episode, “Who Mourns for Adonais?”

Unlike some guest actors, who were relegated to playing background roles, or worse, redshirts, Parrish’s Carolyn Palamas was one of Star Trek’s strongest female protagonists.

While she did serve as a potential love interest for Mr. Scott (James Doohan), Carolyn’s importance quickly became apparent in “Who Mourns for Adonais?” when the God Apollo (Michael Forest) took a liking to the young lieutenant.

In the end, it’s up to none other than the guest character, Lt. Palamas, who was portrayed brilliantly by the late Parrish, to save the day. After being coached and ordered by Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Carolyn, who truly cares for Apollo as he loves her, turns on him — spurning his advances!

Carolyn’s actions give the USS Enterprise the opportunity to fire its phasers and destroy Apollo’s source of power. Both heartbroken and weeping, the Starfleet officer and the God of Greece and Rome stare into one another’s eyes.

Their final scene together is riveting, and it’s all due to the performances of Parrish and Forest. In all of Star Trek lore, their guest contributions — by far — combined for one of the most poignant moments ever captured on TOS, in my humble opinion.

Sadly, Parrish only appeared in the one episode of The Original Series, but her unforgettable portrayal as Carolyn cemented her Star Trek legacy, which endures, despite her last appearance in the franchise coming nearly 60 years ago.

Parrish was born as Marjorie Helle, and she changed her name just eight years before she appeared on Star Trek. In addition to her role in “Who Mourns for Adonais?” on TOS, the actress was among the many Trek crossover performers to appear on Batman, too, which also celebrated its 60th anniversary this year.

In fact, Parrish played a pair of characters in the Adam West-led Batman show: movie actress Dawn Robbins in “The Penguin’s a Jinx” and Glacia Glaze, aka Emma Strunk, in "Ice Spy” and “The Duo Defy,”
