Star Trek: Lower Decks is wrapping up its final season, with the finale airing on December 19th. It was the second of Paramount+'s Star Trek series to be cancelled after five seasons, but that doesn't mean the actors and the fans aren't holding out for more.
In an interview with Trekmovie, Jerry O'Connell, who plays Jack Ransom, said they were very proud of this season and "Come on. I mean… There’s room. Have another animated shows gotten picked up? Yeah, there’s room. Plus, we’re very proud of this last season. We’re very excited, and there’s no sadness. Never a goodbye."
And he's right about there being more room for animated Star Trek. Netflix made room when it picked up the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy. Will Lower Decks have the same fate? Right now, it's not looking that way, but as O'Connell said, there's "never a goodbye." And that's because even as shows have been cancelled, we've seen some of the characters again. Well, with the exception of Star Trek: Enterprise, but that's another story.
Mike McMahan, the creator of Lower Decks, has plenty more ideas in store, according to Bleeding Cool, should Paramount decide to renew the comedy for another season. But even if it doesn't happen, O'Connell told Bleeding Cool that he didn't have any "hard feelings" and that "it's been a great run." And while five seasons of any show nowadays is supposed to be seen as a miracle, fans certainly don't see it that way.
But what are the chances of Paramount changing its mind? Probably not high as, when it cancelled Prodigy, despite a massive fan campaign, it remained resolute. So this will probably be the final season of Lower Decks...at least on Paramount+, but I doubt it's the last we've seen or heard of these characters. They're just too good not to bring back in some form.
