The latest issue of IDW’s Star Trek: Lower Decks comic book series wraps the current run with a touching salute to none other than Captain Worf commanding the Enterprise and a visual wink at Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Check out the synopsis below (per Amazon):

"The thrilling conclusion to the mystery of the vanished Laapeerians! The Enterprise has joined the tumultuous space battle between Captain Freeman and her crew against their dangerous alien assailants."

The synopsis continues as follows:

"Starfleet might not know who these invaders are, but they’re certain they have something to do with the missing population of Laapeeria… It’s up to the Lower Deckers to not only defeat the superpowered ship but recover a whole planet’s worth of people and reunite with Boimler and his away crew while doing it. And then they’ll all hug and stuff, $&#@!*"

The comic's cover art is a nod to The Undiscovered Country's theatrical poster, but with angular animation instead of dramatic movie style. They still have the bold diagonal lines, the exploding energy burst, and the Klingon visage in the background, but now they're framing Boimler, Mariner, and the USS Cerritos to show danger and fun.

It's great how the cover balances reverence with parody: Worf's shadowy visage gives it the gravitas of a cinematic legend, while the styled ships and exaggerated character expressions keep it Lower Decks.

It's the perfect way to end this run, commemorating Worf's history and a classic Trek film while reminding you that this series' specialty is remixing those icons through the eyes of the scrappy ensigns who live in the ship’s literal and figurative lower decks.

Plus, IDW revealed (per TrekMovie.com) that "the door remains open” for more Lower Decks adventures in comic book form.

Star Trek: Lower Decks No. 18 is now on sale. The issue, which is written by Tim Sheridan and features the artwork of Vernon Smith, can be purchased wherever comic books are sold and on Amazon.
