“I love Star Trek. I love Magic. I do not love them together.”
Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek continues to stir up controversy online just weeks ahead of the collectible card game’s release this fall. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, MTG released a new “Debut” video, which included Trek legends like William Shatner and Kate Mulgrew promoting the upcoming CCG, but fans are still quite mixed about the new collaboration.
For instance, @volitanstudio wrote in the comments section of a clip from the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek “Debut” video, which fans can watch below via Star Trek’s official Instagram, “I love Star Trek. I love Magic. I do not love them together.” Another Insta user, @ toby.matt, complained about combining the two iconic brands in the video’s comments section by writing: “There’s ice cream in my spaghetti.”
In fact, one lifelong Magic: The Gathering fan found the idea of pairing Star Trek with MTG so repulsive that the Instagram user vowed to stop playing the collectible card game altogether. @moderntraveltales wrote in the “Debut” clip’s comments section:
“This set allows me to stop playing Magic after 30+ years. Many sets have tried, but this has succeeded. As I am not able to interact, and I do not want to see it. I will probably not touch Arena until this rotates out of standard and for the rest; I can use Star Trek free cubes.”
Fortunately, not all the comments regarding Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek were negative. For instance, @niokee_the_infamous wrote in the “Debut” clip’s comments section: “I wanna boldly collect cards of Star Trek like no man has done it before.” Meanwhile, a digital creator who loves Trek, @observationlounge2, added, “Might have to start playing Magic.”
“The artwork shown here is beautiful,” @ crescent_forge wrote in the “Debut” clip’s comments section. “This set looks like a real labor of love. Can't wait to get my hands on some.” Finally, a Strange New Worlds fan (@_amandawho) chimed in by writing, “I don't play but the art on these cards is so beautiful that I want them. Also, I love [and am] excited Ethan Peck is [in the game].”
I’ve never played MTG. However, if you’re one of the fans who are excited to start collecting Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek like me, we don’t have to wait much longer. The collectible card game officially drops on Friday, Nov. 13, (Global Tabletop Release).
However, special Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek prelease events will be held from Nov. 6 through 12, along with an MTG Arena release on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
Personally, I’m most excited about possibly finding the signed headliner cards which feature the autographs of some of Trek’s biggest actors, including William Shatner, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Brent Spiner, among others.
The special MTG/Star Trek headliner autograph cards can be found in the Beam Me Up bundle ($99.99), Draft Night ($119.99), and/or through the Collector Boosters ($39.99).
Now, share your thoughts and comments about Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek via the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages. Are you one of the haters, or are you excited to start collecting MTG cards, too?
Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
