Deadline reveals that a brand-new Star Trek film is in the works from the writing team who penned Spider-Man: Homecoming. According to the trade, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will not only craft the upcoming movie’s screenplay, but they will also direct and produce the project.

Sadly, the report does not offer any details about the plot. However, an unnamed source tells the publication that “Goldstein and Daley’s film is a completely new take on the Star Trek universe and not connected to any previous or current television series, movie or prior movie development projects.”

Sources also told Deadline, although this tidbit has NOT been confirmed, that the new Star Trek movie will feature characters never seen before in the science fiction franchise’s nearly 60 years of existence.

Trekkies, this is exciting news, indeed, because now the fandom has a total of three movies to look forward to in the coming years. For those who aren’t familiar with the details concerning the other two film projects, the announcement came after Paramount and Skydance officially merged.

The news broke back on Aug. 13, that Star Trek was a "priority" for the new Paramount Skydance Corporation, and that two movies are also being developed separately from Goldstein and Daley’s production under their GoldDay banner.

The first is also an original take with brand-new characters. Toby Haynes of Star Wars: Andor fame is slated to direct while Seth Grahame Smith will pen the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Simon Kinberg will serve as producers.

The second film revealed to be in development back August is also being produced by Abrams, who oversaw all three installments in the Kelvin Timeline, while also directing Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness.

This new movie among the three now being pursued by Paramount Skydance WILL feature none other than fan-favorites Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the company of the USS Enterprise. Now, while it’s been wildly speculated, but unconfirmed by Paramount, this version of the beloved original crew reportedly won't feature Chris Pine nor his castmates from the Kelvin flicks.

There’s so much to be excited about, Trekkies! Hopefully, these new films will wash away the bad taste left in our mouths by the streaming movie Star Trek: Section 31. Also, too much time has passed since creator Gene Roddenberry’s beloved universe has been represented on the big screen. Remember, Star Trek Beyond hit theaters way back in 2016, and that is an unacceptable absence in cinemas for the most popular sci-fi property ever.
