9. Kirk’s 'death' | Into Darkness
In a controversial twist on the most famous scene in The Wrath of Khan, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) sacrifices himself by going into a highly radioactive part of the Enterprise's engine room to manually realign the warp core and save the ship. Later, it's Kirk who puts his palm on the glass between himself and Spock, as the radiation poisoning starts to take hold, recreating the iconic moment, but in reverse.
Kirk is dead. Spock weeps, his Vulcan emotional control shattered, screaming, "Khan!" in anger. The moment does an excellent job of showing the friendship between Kirk and Spock, but many fans saw it as a fake-out death since Kirk is later restored with the use of Khan’s superhuman blood.
While intense in the moment, the reality that Kirk is not forever dead meant less emotional impact for some viewers. It demonstrates how much Spock has come to care for his captain and buddy, even if the finality that gave the first moment its weight isn’t here.
