8. Amanda’s death | Star Trek (2009)

One of the most heartbreaking moments in modern Star Trek was the death of Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson, in the Kelvin Timeline. Vulcan is swallowed by a black hole created by the Romulan Nero's red matter weapon, and Amanda is one of the countless evacuees from the dying planet.

In a horrific twist, the transporter fails to latch onto Spock's mother, and she falls to her death before Spock can do anything. To add to the pain, Spock is half-Vulcan and unable to display his emotions in public, even in the wake of catastrophic loss. In the Kevin Timeline, the death of Amanda is the last straw for Spock and his relationship with his emotions.
