6. Vulcan’s destruction | Star Trek (2009)

The destruction of the planet Vulcan is one of the most daring narrative choices in the history of Star Trek. Nero's scheme of revenge goes all too well, as his mining ship digs down to the core of Vulcan, triggering red matter, and causes the entire planet to implode into a black hole.

In minutes, the Federation has lost one of its foundation worlds, home to one of its most significant species. We see the death of billions of Vulcans, the extinction of an entire culture. The visuals are beautiful and horrific.

The death toll is even worse when Starfleet ships are lost trying to stop the Romulan attack. For fans who had been around for a while and grew up with the planet as a Trek staple, seeing Vulcan destroyed was like losing a character. This injury will never heal because the incident is so permanently fixed in the Kelvin Timeline, altering the cosmos drastically.
