4. Destruction of the Enterprise-D | Generations

The seven-season saga of the Next Generation crew aboard the cherished USS Enterprise-D ends abruptly on Veridian III. The Duras sisters' Klingon Bird-of-Prey penetrates the Enterprise's shields, thanks to Dr. Soran's reprogramming of Geordi's visor, and does severe damage to the engineering section.

The crew separates the saucer, but due to a warp core breach in the damaged stardrive section, it crashes forcefully into the planet below. The Federation’s flagship has a stunning and deadly crash-landing, scraping the surface of Veridian III and tearing through forests in its wake. For the fans who had seven years invested in her, watching that ship go down was like losing a home.

The Enterprise-D was nearly lost twice, once in the accident and again when you realize that in the original timeline, Soran’s plan would have wiped out the entire Veridian system along with the saucer’s wreckage.

Decades later, TNG fans are still hurting over the tragic end of a ship that deserved better. Thankfully, Geordi salvaged and then rebuilt the Enterprise-D over the years for her unveiling at the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3.
