3. Destruction of the USS Enterprise | The Search for Spock

Admiral Kirk makes the hard decision to destroy the refit USS Enterprise NCC-1701 to keep her from falling to the Klingons. Kirk and his crew steal the decommissioned spaceship and make an unsanctioned rescue mission to the Genesis Planet, but are outgunned by Commander Kruge’s Bird-of-Prey.

In desperation, Kirk exploits the Klingons’ arrogance, luring them onto the Enterprise with the promise of Genesis' secrets, and then activates the ship’s auto-destruct. The Enterprise, which had taken Kirk and crew on many adventures since The Original Series, explodes in orbit, taking several Klingons with it, as the skeleton crew beams down to the Genesis Planet below.

Kirk and his officers watch their home burn up in the atmosphere from the surface of the planet, blazing debris flashing across the sky. Kirk’s whispered, “My God, Bones, what have I done?” speaks volumes about the enormity of the loss. Kirk gave up the ship that gave him his career, his legend, and his life to save his comrade.
