The season finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is here. However, without any new Star Trek content known to be in production, this leaves the franchise open to expand in almost any direction, including the three films which were all announced in 2025.
Starfleet Academy actor Robert Picardo, who reprised his role as The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager and Prodigy dished a bit about the future of Star Trek, saying in an interview via ScreenRant: "I've heard that the movie franchise is going to be totally reinvented with all new characters. That'll be great to see and interesting. I don't think we've ever done that before."
Picardo continued by saying:
"You know what I mean? Even when they rebooted the original characters in the movies with Chris Pine a dozen years ago or whatever it was, they were still familiar characters. Now we're going to see presumably all-new Star Trek characters. That'll be interesting."
Alex Kurtzman mentioned in interviews that he's working on more Star Trek TV/streaming shows, and a few other series ideas have been bandied about, including a series that would feature Jonathan Archer from Enterprise as the Federation's first president. Scott Bakula would return to reprise the role, and while this series is mostly rumor, Star Trek meets NCIS is a compelling idea, and I would love to see Bakula back on TV!
Series or movies which feature new characters might be a tough sell for many fans, as the franchise's shows usually don't get the love they deserve until 20 or even 25 years later, thanks to streaming. A new movie universe, with original characters in a familiar environment, might draw in curious fans.
Regardless, though, new characters are on the way. However, one film project will feature The Original Series crew, according to the trade publication Deadline: "The studio has another installment with Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of usual characters returning with [J.J.] Abrams producing and Steve Yockey writing."
