5. Picard shares Sarek's mind meld with Spock

The end of this episode closes a story arc that began in 1967, when we first met Spock's parents and learned he and Sarek were estranged. In "Unificiation I," Sarek passes away shortly after Picard visits him, and it's his duty to let Spock know of Sarek's death when they meet on Romulus at the start of "Unification II."

The ambassador, in classic Vulcan fashion, basically says to Picard, "I'd rather tell you about my secret spy plans than my emotions." Can you imagine Sarek watching from Sha-Ka-Ree? "What did my son just say?"

In the final scene of "Unification II," before Spock and Picard part company on Romulus, the Ambassador mentions that he never mind-melded with his father. However, as all Star Trek fans know, Sarek had mind-melded with Picard.

Picard says to Spock, "I offer you the chance to touch what he shared with me." And the love Sarek carried for his son finally touches Spock's mind. The result is one of Nimoy's finest moments--the man really was a powerhouse actor and the facial expression is so sublime! It's a heartfelt farewell.
