Celebrating Nichols’ finest moments in Star Trek as our beloved Uhura.
Nichelle Nichols’ indelible portrayal as Nyota Uhura is firmly secured in the annals of Star Trek history. And on the late actresses’ 93rd birthday, Redshirts Always Die is honoring Nichols' memory with some of her finest moments as the resourceful communications officer of the starship Enterprise.
5. Transporter escape | Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Starfleet denied Admiral Kirk’s (William Shatner) request to return to the Genesis Planet in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, but the crew of the USS Enterprise wasn't to be denied. However, part of our ragtag group of heroes never would have been able to join Scotty (James Doohan) and Chekov (Walter Koenig) on the starship had it not been for Uhura.
Maning the transporter station, Uhura endured the wisecracks of a much younger, ambitious officer, who didn’t have a clue what he was in for. Suddenly, the lieutenant, who was dying for just a surprise or two in his life, was staring down the barrel of Uhura’s phaser!
Uhura then made the youngster sit in the closet as she illegally transported Kirk, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and helmsman Sulu (George Takei) onto the Enterprise to join Scotty and Chekov in stealing the starship!
Yes, our beloved Enterprise crew turned into rebellious rogues and made off with the Federation vessel all to rescue their fallen comrade, Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) after his tragic death in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And Uhura was an integral part of the rebellion, although she missed out on the actual trip to Genesis.
