“Pre-order now and boldly go where no fan has gone before.”
It’s been nearly six decades since NBC first aired “The Man Trap” on Sept. 8, 1966. And to commemorate the stellar occasion, Amazon is offering Star Trek fans the opportunity to own an exclusive 60th anniversary Blu-ray. The special set comes complete with all 79 episodes — the visually enhanced versions — on a total of 20 discs with over nine hours of bonus features. The product’s description reads as follows (per Amazon):
“Celebrate 60 years of Star Trek: The Original Series with a collector’s experience designed for true fans. Return to the adventures that started it all with the original crew of the USS Enterprise where a cultural phenomenon was born. This Amazon Exclusive Deluxe Giftset brings the nostalgia home with a limited-edition set of premium lobby cards featuring iconic scenes and rare behind-the-scenes moments."
The production description continues as follows:
“An exclusive 4-inch Tiny Vinyl* adds to the experience, playing the unforgettable theme from all three seasons along with classic sound effects that instantly transport you back. Limited and made for collectors, this is your chance to own a piece of Star Trek history. Pre-order now and boldly go where no fan has gone before.”
To take the words out of Mr. Spock’s (Leonard Nimoy) mouth, I find the “tiny vinyl,” which plays at a speed of 33 RPM, most fascinating. However, the lobby cards — once flipped over and combined like a puzzle — create a stunning black and silver tribute logo to 60 years of Star Trek. Meanwhile, on the front of the nine lobby cards, there are images from different episodes of TOS.
Personally, I’d like to have seen an image from “Mirror, Mirror” represented on one of the lobby cards, or even a tribute to the mobsters of Sigma Iotia from "A Piece of the Action." Unfortunately, its hard to include everyone’s favorite moments from Star Trek on only nine collectibles.
However, there is the famous image of Mr. Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) from “The Trouble with Tribbles” plus another featuring Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and company on the Class K planet Harry Mudd (Roger C. Carmel) and the androids populated in “I, Mudd.” Fans can get a better look at all the Blu-ray’s lobby cards by visiting the listing on Amazon.
The Amazon exclusive Star Trek: The Original Series: 60th Anniversary Blu-ray is now available to preorder by following this link, and it is slated to be released on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The giftset costs $139.99. Do you plan on purchasing a set to celebrate six decades of boldly going where no one has gone before?
