First airing on October 13, 1966, the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Mudd’s Women” is a messy, fascinating 60-year-old time capsule that remains worth revisiting because it places Trek’s aspirational ideals in direct conflict with some of its most dated impulses.
It can be cringeworthy at times, but beneath the “Wagon Train to the stars” misogyny lies a flawed yet surprisingly thought-provoking story about the commodification of women, the pursuit of artificial beauty, and the question of who gets to decide a person’s worth.
