1. A virus that exposes who the crew really is
On Psi 2000, a mind-altering infection rides back to the USS Enterprise on a careless, ungloved hand, and suddenly the ship becomes a lab for everyone’s buried feelings.
The disease begins to spread throughout the crew, and it “removes their inhibitions,” letting sublimated fears and desires run the show, which is a smart character engine even in 2026. Because of that, the episode doubles as a cheat code introduction to the ensemble.
Sulu plays a swashbuckler, Joe spirals into guilt and nihilism, Riley turns the ship’s systems into his personal stage, and everyone’s choices feel like exaggerated versions of traits they already carry. It’s an early demonstration of Trek’s interest in psychology: sci-fi to pry open the human mind, not just wave around ray guns.
