“Shore Leave” first aired on December 29, 1966, and six decades later it still feels like Star Trek’s first proper “what if the holodeck went feral” story: an exhausted crew walks into a perfect vacation planet, only to find their fantasies and anxieties literally stalking them.

It’s light and goofy on the surface, but there’s just enough menace and character work underneath to make it quite enjoyable. With that in mind, the following are five reasons "Shore Leave" is still worth watching today.
