Star Trek fans can preorder fascinating TOS replica tricorder (but is it worth the price?)

Star Trek fans can finally get a tricorder that feels like it came straight off the Enterprise, but its premium price may give even die‑hard collectors pause.

Functionality

On the functional side, this tricorder leans hard into being a working gadget, not just a static display. Inside is a 320 x 240 full‑color LCD screen, multiple ambient and atmospheric sensors, and a suite of environmental‑style readouts that let you “scan” your surroundings in a playful way.

It also recreates the signature scanning audio from TOS, along with additional sound effects tied to different buttons and interactions, which goes a long way toward selling the fantasy when you’re using it. As someone who likes a prop to do more than just sit on a shelf, that interactivity is one of the strongest arguments in favor of the price.

The tricorder also comes loaded with an in-universe archive: more than 200 pre-recorded Captain’s Logs from the Enterprise crew, plus storage for your own short personal logs that you can record directly on the device. That mix of canonical audio and user-created entries turns it into a kind of role-play hub; you can flip it open, listen to a log, then add your own “mission report” after a convention or game night.

Removable function discs snap into the front compartment to change modes, and there’s even a dedicated status disc for checking things like battery level and memory. It’s a very TOS way to handle modern UI, and it’s clever enough that I think it will make fans want to play with the tricorder instead of treating it as a fragile collectible.
