60 years after its debut on September 22, 1966, Star Trek's “Where No Man Has Gone Before” episode still crackles with tension thanks to its functioning as both a mission statement and a psychological thriller about friendship, ambition, and the terrifying line between humanity and godhood.

More than an early space adventure, the episode offers a curious glimpse of Captain Kirk before the The Original Series fully settles into its familiar rhythm, forcing him to confront an impossible choice between loyalty to his oldest friend and responsibility to the ship under his command at the very edge of the galaxy.

With that in mind, the following are five elements which make "Where No Man Has Gone Before" worth watching even today.
