Fans finally get their first look at their beloved Trek actors since the cryptic teaser trailers.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom poses a threat so great that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can’t face it alone. And Star Trek fans will undoubtedly love watching the first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday (below) because some of Trek’s finest actors are on full display as they will undoubtedly have to unite to face RDJ’s menacing return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Doomsday trailer begins with a run-down Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, as Professor X (Sir Patrick Stewart) witnesses a massive explosion from inside the famous X-Mansion.
Stewart is best known for portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he reprises his other most well-known character to help take on the looming threat brought on by Doctor Doom’s nefarious ambitions.
Stewart’s Professor X can also be seen later in the footage with his lifelong friend/nemesis Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen), but it’s a Strange New Worlds mainstay who steals the thunder midway through the official Doomsday trailer: Rebecca Romijn.
Romijn, who portrays Number One, aka Una Chin-Riley in Strange New Worlds, reprises her role as Mystique in Doomsday, and there’s an unforgettably cool scene with her taking on the New Avengers’ team member Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) in what appears to be the ruins of the X-Mansion.
And true to form, Mystique takes on the appearance of Yelena as the two Black Widows battle one another, which is an homage to the villainous Mutant assuming the form of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to fight the Adamantium-clawed X-Men character in the franchise’s opening film back in 2000.
Last, but certainly not least, Chris Hemsworth is featured heavily throughout the Doomsday footage as Thor Odinson, Marvel’s God of Thunder and one of the most powerful Avengers ever — don't tell Hulk that, though. In fact, while fans can’t see RDJ’s face, Thor comes toe-to-toe with Doctor Doom near the end of the trailer, but the masked villain clearly has the upper hand.
Hemsworth, who portrayed the father of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) in Star Trek (2009), just happens to play one of my favorite Avengers in the MCU. And, sure enough, Hemsworth is featured in the most jaw-dropping scene of the new Doomsday trailer — and I don’t mean coming up against Doctor Doom.
Rather, my favorite scene from the trailer is at the very end when Thor is reunited with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), aka the original Captain America. Unfortunately, Thor is unconvinced that this is really his friend and fellow superhero at first.
However, as soon as Cap is able to summon and wield the mighty hammer, Mjolnir, Thor himself and fans everywhere must realize this reunion is the first step in truly stopping Doctor Doom — undoubtedly at the very end of the sequel, Secret Wars.
