Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, and more tell stories about the iconic actor.
For those Star Trek fans who still haven’t checked out Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner’s Dropping Names and Other Things podcast, there will never be a better time. The two Next Generation and Picard staples have put together an incredible compilation of stories honoring the late Patrick Stewart, which fans can watch below in its entirety, courtesy of the program’s official YouTube channel.
As a lifelong Trekkie, I was most touched by the very first clip, which featured The Next Generation’s LeVar Burton, aka the Enterprise-D’s engineering master Geordi La Forge, as a guest on the podcast. Spiner, Frakes, and Burton reminisced about joining Stewart for a season-long TNG reunion during Picard’s final 10 episodes.
The three friends and Star Trek colleagues talked about how much it meant to be back together and how much it meant to Sir Stewart to have them all around him again during Picard’s streaming swan song.
“Well, nothing was different about the way we behaved with each other,” Spiner pointed out when comparing their time on Picard to The Next Generation. “He was glad to have us with him,” Frakes and Burton agreed during the same sit-down.
I also couldn’t help but laugh when Star Trek legend Rick Berman rehashed the controversial story of Stewart being cast on The Next Generation with Frakes and Spiner. “No bald Englishman is going to become my next Captain Kirk,” Berman recalled what creator Gene Roddenberry initially said about casting Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard.
I for one am glad Roddenberry came to his senses because Picard became one of the franchise's most beloved and commanding characters.
