“See you on the next holodeck…”
Star Trek's on-and-off-screen family members and fans continue to share memories and mourn the loss of Sir Patrick Stewart. And his Next Generation and Picard costar Whoopi Goldberg posted the incredibly sweet and heartwarming photo below on social media to remember her close friend and colleague.
Goldberg also wrote on her official Instagram’s post: “See you on the next holodeck @sirpatstew RIP.”
For those fans who may be new to the Star Trek fandom, the two figures shown in Goldberg’s Instagram photo are Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Stewart) and Guinan’s (Goldberg) holodeck characters, Dixon Hill and his cousin Gloria respectively, who appeared together in The Next Generation’s season 4 episode, “Clues.”
Goldberg and Stewart’s Next Generation characters shared a very special relationship, and I think their on-screen chemistry worked so well because the two actors were incredibly close friends away from those Star Trek sets. Guinan first appeared in the TNG season 2 premiere “The Child,” and she reprised the fan-favorite role in the second season of the Picard streaming series years later.
Personally, aside from her often hilarious interactions with Q (John de Lancie) in The Next Generation, my favorite Guinan moments came in the feature film Star Trek Generations (1994). And in an ironic twist of fate, Goldberg actually shared pivotal scenes in that movie with the late Walter Koenig and Stewart, both of whom passed away this week.
When the Enterprise-B encounters the Nexus at the beginning of Generations, it’s Pavel Chekov (Koenig) who helps and comforts Guinan after she is rescued in the 23rd century. Meanwhile, in the 24th century, it is Guinan who explains to Picard why Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell) wants to get back to the Nexus so badly.
Guinan also reveals to Picard that Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) is in the Nexus, and that he can seek him out to help stop Soran from destroying Veridian III and its solar system.
