And the Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation goes to…

There are those pockets of the Star Trek fandom which continue to criticize the current regime under the leadership of Alex Kurtzman. However, despite how they might feel about the franchise’s executive producer, there’s no denying that Kurtzman scored a homerun with the short-lived animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.

The show, which is essentially a love letter and sequel to Star Trek: Voyager, only lasted two seasons, but it continues to defy the odds even in cancellation. The last episode dropped back in 2024, but Prodigy just scored the 2026 Children's & Family Emmy award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation - Background Design.

Visual development artist Bastien Grivet walked away with the jury prize. Sadly, though, Kate Mulgrew, who reprised her role as both Admiral Janeway and Hologram Janeway, did not win the Outstanding Multiple Role Voice Performer in a Children's or Young Teen Program Emmy she'd been nominated for. Instead, the honor went to Tiny Toons Looniversity star David Errigo Jr., who voices both Hamton J. Pig and Plucky Duck.

Prodigy was up for another award: Outstanding Writing for a Children's or Young Teen Animated Series. The Children's & Family Emmy Award nomination came courtesy of the season 2 episode “The Devourer of All Things, Part I.” Unfortunately, Star Trek missed out on this honor, too, which was awarded to the Win or Lose animated episode “Pickle.”

I still can’t believe a brilliant show like Prodigy was canceled after only two seasons, especially with so much potential. Perhaps, more Voyager regulars would have joined the animated series along with Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and Robert Beltran — all of whom reprised their iconic roles from the beloved Voyager series. Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
