“I thought nothing could be more enjoyable than voicing Hologram Janeway…”
For whatever reason, Star Trek’s must-see animated series Prodigy flew under the radar for many fans, and, sadly, the streaming show was canceled after only two seasons. Nonetheless, it was a joyous time in the professional life of actress Kate Mulgrew, who reprised her role as Kathryn Janeway from Voyager.
And Mulgrew reminisced about her experience on Prodigy in an interview with TV Insider by saying: “I was shooting Mr. Mercedes when I got the call from Alex Kurtzman [Star Trek overseer and executive producer]. My life was rich, and the work was good."
"I thought nothing could be more enjoyable than voicing Hologram Janeway in Prodigy, which was beautifully constructed by the Hageman Brothers," Mulgrew continued. "Then to record it in London while doing The Man Who Fell to Earth; there always seems to be a genuine energy behind everything Star Trek–related after Voyager."
Mulgrew portrayed several versions of her iconic Voyager character while starring in Prodigy, including Captain, Holorgram, and Admiral Janeway. However, I personally enjoyed listening to Mulgrew voice Mirror Janeway — for the first time ever — in season 2’s “Cracked Mirror” Universe episode.
Not only do Star Trek fans finally get to see a Mirror Universe version of Janeway in Prodigy, but they were also treated to a Mirror Chakotay (Robert Beltran) character, too! The best scene from “Cracked Mirror” takes place at the end of the episode, though, when Admiral Janeway finally reunites with Captain Chakotay in one of the most emotional scenes to ever play out in an animated Trek.
