Recollection: A Star Trek Story episode 12, “Bitter After A Time,” turns the hull impact from the previous chapter into a test of the USS Good Hope’s fragile crew dynamic. JAID must navigate a dangerous debris field, while the disruption brings Early and Accel’s poorly concealed feelings closer to the surface and leaves Dizzy questioning what she remembers.

The chapter combines crisis-driven momentum with sharper interpersonal comedy, making it one of the livelier installments of the series so far. While it provides no simple answers about JAID or the ship’s course, it introduces another unsettling development involving the passengers’ memories.

With that in mind, the following pages examine Recollection episode 12's storytelling, character development, and artwork, as the heat of the moment finally gets the better of Early and Accel.

1. Artwork makes the chaos feel immediate

The artwork gives the debris-field sequence a strong sense of motion and instability. Repeated impacts, sparks, shaking corridors, and sudden loss of lighting make the Good Hope feel vulnerable as the passengers scramble to respond. The ship is being physically battered, forcing everyone to react before they understand the full situation.

The visual timing is particularly effective when Dizzy rushes past JAID, partially passing through the hologram as she pushes Early and Accel toward the cryopods. The moment establishes the urgency while emphasizing JAID’s unusual position aboard the ship. She can provide warnings and information, but she cannot physically help the passengers escape danger.

The brief blackout also creates one of the episode’s better comedic moments. Early and Accel attempt to discuss the hidden terminal and isolinear chip without alerting Dizzy, but their coded conversation is anything but convincing. Dizzy’s acknowledgment that she has noticed the conspicuous terminal undercuts their attempt at secrecy at exactly the right moment.
