1. Storytelling raises the stakes
“A Wreath of Pretty Flowers Which Smell Bad” succeeds because the danger is easy to understand. The passengers have limited time to save Remy, and each attempted solution creates another obstacle. The manual override being outside the airlock is particularly effective because the obvious solution is just out of reach.
The pacing benefits from that escalation. Remy is locked out, JAID cannot open the door, the crew learns the chamber will eventually depressurize, and the manual solution requires access to the dangerous area. The sequence steadily increases the pressure without feeling artificially complicated.
The earlier reboarding scene also adds important context. Accel’s encounter with the security field, combined with Early’s realization that they have nowhere to run and little ability to defend themselves, reinforces the passengers’ lack of control. They were allowed off the Good Hope on the ship’s terms. Once the door closes behind them, their supposed choices disappear.
