JAID’s inability to control the airlock is alarming on its own, but it becomes more troubling when the passengers cannot determine whether she is being overridden, malfunctioning, or deceiving them. Her suggestion that everyone travel in pairs is logical, yet it also makes the hologram feel more deeply embedded in the system of surveillance the group is beginning to fear.
The episode’s ending is particularly effective because it does not force Early into an immediate decision. She considers the possible people she could partner with, evaluates their behavior, and recognizes that every option carries risk.
That closing moment preserves the story’s quiet, character-driven approach to suspense. The mystery is not only hidden in a terminal or encoded on a chip; it now exists in every conversation Early has with the people around her.
