Star Trek: Section 31 will follow other projects and get its own comic book tie-in
By Chad Porto
We are nearing closer and closer to the the release of Star Trek: Section 3 on Paramount+. The made-for-streaming film will depict the rise of the black-ops section of the Federation and how they became the evil force fans will surely remember them being. The group will be led by Philippa Georgiou, a former empress.
The movie will wrap up the story that Star Trek: Discovery started in season two, teasing the unethical agency's growth and development over the years, only instead of a show, it'll be a single film. The film is set to see Michelle Yeoh reprise her role as the empress from the Mirror Universe, Philippa Georgiou. She'll lead a group of miscreants into a scenario that we're not entirely sure of just yet.
The movie is an attempt by Paramount+ and Star Trek to bring a dose of The Guardians of the Galaxy to the Star Trek franchise, making this a bright and apparently whimsical film. At least, if you believe the marketing. The film concept has already rubbed fans the wrong way and the tone of the advertisements has turned off what few fans may have had hopes for this project.
It may still be good, we'll have to wait and see but the temperature for this project isn't exactly hot. So to find out that the film is getting a one-shot, comic book tie-in was certainly a shock.
IDW has announced that there will be a tie-in comic for the direct-to-streaming movie. It will only be a single issue and will be released on Feb. 5, 2025, nearly two weeks after the film premieres on Jan. 24, 2025.
The book will be written by first-time Star Trek writer Alyssa Wong, while the art will be done by Megan Levans. Levans, unlike Wong, has been working on Star Trek comics for decades. So fans should know what to expect from her work. The price for the book will start at $5.99, though some outlets are offering it for $4.19 if you pre-order it.
