“If you like a really thrilling survival adventure, this is the game for you.”

Star Trek fans, this is not the final frontier. No, it's the Shadow Frontier. The upcoming video game, which was just announced at IGN Live 2026, is a collaborative “psychological thriller” from Paramount Games Studio and Bloober Team.

Unfortunately, Star Trek: Shadow Frontier won’t drop until sometime in 2027, but the brand-new announcement trailer (below), courtesy of Trek's official Instagram account, features the return of a beloved character, who first appeared in The Next Generation: Ro Laren!

Michelle Forbes is back and lending her voice to reprise the role of the tough, always speaks-her-mind Bajoran. However, neither the SVP Head of Creative & Production for Paramount Games Studio, Shawn Kittelsen, nor Bloober’s Head of Publishing, Michal Gembicki, would reveal when and where the video game is set within the framework of Star Trek's vast timeline.

The synopsis (per Steam) reads as follows: "Step into the fractured mind of former Lieutenant Ro Laren (voiced by Michelle Forbes) as she seeks to rescue an old friend by embarking on a harrowing journey of survival and self-discovery." By the way, gamers playing as Ro will be armed with both a phaser and tricorder as they navigate the lethal planet.

Forbes first appeared as Ensign Ro Laren in the fifth season of The Next Generation. However, she ultimately disappointed Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) after sympathizing with the Maquis — and doing the right thing — in season 7.

Ro later returned to face her demons and the former Enterprise-D commander in Star Trek: Picard’s third and final season, and she nobly sacrificed herself to save others, which ended the character's long-running arc.

Shadow Frontier was teased by Kittelsen (via IGN) as "A new single-player third person action game [...], the same team behind Silent High remake,” at this year’s IGN Live event.

"I would describe the genre as a psychological thriller," Kittelsen continued. "If you like a really thrilling survival adventure, this is the game for you. If you're a Star Trek fan who wants to dig into a character like Ro Laren, this is the game for you.”

Gembicki added during the conversation: "This is not a Star Trek game like you've ever played before. [Ro finds herself in] a bit of a graveyard for spacehships. [She has] to figure out what happened there and why is there so much wreckage."

I can't believe how fortunate Trekkies have been where Star Trek games are concerned. First, with the release of Voyager — Across the Unknown, featuring the voices of the classic show's actors Tim Russ and Robert Duncan McNeill, and now we get a horror/psychological thriller featuring Forbes' beloved character.

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier will be available on the Steam online gaming platform, as well as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Do you plan on playing the game when it finally drops in 2027? What did you think of the announcement trailer?

Share your thoughts and comments with us on the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages. And fans can now add Shadow Frontier to their wish list on Steam.

Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
