“That’s one of the first things that we that we bonded over…”
Some of the most fascinating stories Star Trek fans share with one another is how they discovered the iconic science fiction franchise. And, as it turns out, both Strange New Worlds’ actors Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn were introduced to The Original Series by their moms when they were younger. Mount said in an interview (per TrekMovie.com):
“Rebecca and I both were introduced to The Original Series when we were about seven or eight by our mothers. That’s one of the first things that we that we bonded over, and to me, it wasn’t even a bucket list item as an actor because it just never occurred to me that I could be on Star Trek, much less end up the captain of the Enterprise.”
Romijn and Mount, who portray Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley and Captain Christopher Pike respectively on Strange New Worlds, also share the fact that their SNW character were first introduced in season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery. Romijn responded during the same sit-down by saying:
“As Anson mentioned, having been introduced to The Original Series by our mothers, and now I get to do the same for my daughters. Just this week […] I just introduced Star Trek to my five-year-old niece, who’s completely enthralled and cannot get enough."
Romijn added: "It’s all she’s talking about now. I think that it will continue because we will continue to show younger generations a version of the future that’s optimistic and hopeful, and not scary. It’s an honor to be a part of it.”
I, too, was introduced to Star Trek by mom, although it was years after it first aired on NBC from 1966 through 1969. I was a very young child, so I can’t remember which channel The Original Series came on in syndication, but I clearly remember it started at 10:30 p.m. every weeknight, which was way past my bedtime.
My sister and I had to be in bed by 8 p.m. because school started so early in the morning. However, my mother would always wake me up at 10:30 p.m., so we could watch Star Trek together, and that’s how my love of the franchise began.
How about you? Were you also introduced to Star Trek by one of your parents, or relatives, like Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn were?
