The well-deserving ensign finally garners the rank of lieutenant.
Warning! The following contains SPOILERS from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 episode 8 “Orders of Magnitude.”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4’s eighth episode, “Orders of Magnitude,” is one of those must-watch installments for so many reasons. However, while many fans will undoubtedly remember it as a Paul Wesley (James T. Kirk) or Joe Morton (Admiral Simon Reeger)-centric adventure, actress Celia Rose Gooding steals the show in the subplot, which ends with her character, Ensign Nyota Uhura, finally being promoted to lieutenant, junior grade.
While Kirk is logically cooking up his necessary mutiny against Badmiral Reeger, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and a landing party including Uhura is lured into a trap by a distress beacon. Unfortunately, though, the USS Enterprise members arrive to find the signal's source only to be taken prisoner by a ruthless group of Andorians.
Sadly, Star Trek: Enterprise fans, there is not an appearance or even a cameo by the franchise’s most beloved and famous Andorian, Commander Shran (Jeffrey Combs), even though the alien species has a life expectancy up to 135 years.
Nevertheless, Uhura is up to the task when it going toe to toe with the deadly Andorian Turr (Currie Graham), who nearly kills Vulcan Cadet A’Sha (Bianca Nugara) to coerce cooperation fromj the Enterprise landing party. Unfortunately, for Turr, who is clearly not as clever as Shran, Uhura tricks the Andorian when she agrees to help them with the communications array.
Instead of serving the Andorians, though, the array is reprogramed to omit a sound that nearly incapacitates all of the aliens. However, Uhura must also defeat Turr in hand-to-hand combat, which she does, in order to rescue Captain Pike, Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), and the rest of the landing party.
At the conclusion of “Orders of Magnitude,” Uhura’s actions pay off as the young ensign is finally promoted to lieutenant, nearly four whole seasons after Gooding’s version of the character first appeared on Strange New Worlds during its series premiere in 2022.
I loved this episode because two of the OG Star Trek characters got major screen time, even though Kirk and Uhura were stuck in different settings and facing incredible obstacles separate from what the other was going through. Gooding absolutely steals the spotlight, though, as Uhura gets to show off both her brains and brawn to overcome a seemingly insurmountable foe.
