Is Star Trek: SNW's Hangover episode worth remembering? (SPOILER review)

A lost shuttle, a bomb, and a planet-wide blackout turn shore leave into an unexpectedly heartfelt Ortegas and Scotty adventure.

2. Character development: Ortegas & Scotty learn to listen

Melissa Navia and Martin Quinn carry “Human Best Friend” because the episode turns Ortegas and Scotty’s ongoing irritation into its central emotional thread.

Their rivalry has been funny, but it finally becomes productive when they are forced to retrieve the shuttle and deal with the bomb together. The payoff is not a sudden best friend’s declaration; it is the more satisfying realization that both have been misreading the other.

Scotty’s concern about Ortegas pushing the ship too hard and Ortegas’ impatience with Scotty’s constant caution are both rooted in the same thing: they care intensely about the Enterprise and the people on it.

Once they recognize that they are “not so different after all,” the conflict shifts from petty friction into the beginnings of genuine respect. It is a simple character beat, but Navia and Quinn make it feel earned.

Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck) also gets a quieter but meaningful emotional turn when it's revealed that the hallucination of James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) he was having turns out to be real!

The episode turns a joke about Spock’s “human best friend” into a sincere beat about the beginning of an important bond, which lends itself to some fantastic character development for both Star Trek icons.
