2. Character development: Pike finally confronts his loss
Strange New Worlds season 4 episode 7's strongest achievement is its willingness to treat Pike’s loss of Juliet seriously. Juliet may not exist in the ordinary timeline, but Pike lived with her, loved her, and grew old with Batel in a reality that was emotionally real to him. “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass” recognizes losing that life is still a loss, even if no one else remembers it in the same way.
Trelane’s soap-opera scenario initially seems like another mischievous experiment in making humans behave theatrically. Instead, it becomes an unexpectedly effective device for stripping away the emotional restraint Pike relies on. The episode lets him acknowledge that he did not only lose Batel; Pike lost a family and a future that he briefly believed were his.
That development gives the larger Pike arc a needed dimension. His familiar future remains an unavoidable part of his character, but this episode reminds viewers that foreknowledge is not his only burden. He also carries memories of possibilities that vanished, and the fact that they were impossible does not make the mourning less valid.
