5. Legacy and franchise impact

“Space Seed” became foundational, not only introducing Khan but directly seeding Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, one of the franchise’s most acclaimed films. Its blend of swashbuckling action, moral ambiguity, and operatic villainy helped define the TOS aesthetic and established the idea that past Earth conflicts could echo far into Starfleet’s future.

Many remember "The Neutral Zone" more for what it sets up than for its actual tale. It brings the Romulans back to the Federation after years of silence and hints at a mystery third power that is destroying outposts along the Neutral Zone. Later, this was changed to the Borg.

In that way, it reminds me of "Space Seed," not by introducing a famous adversary right away, but by quietly setting up TNG's long-term political and existential concerns instead of giving us one memorable villain.
