2. Christine Chapel (Strange New Worlds and The Original Series)
Mr. Spock and Nurse Chapel have arguably become the franchise’s most layered unfulfilled romance. Their Strange New Worlds relationship begins in flirtation and emotional proximity: Chapel sees Spock’s human side, while Spock increasingly relies on her when he is confused by his own reactions. Their relationship moves from subtext to an openly romantic kiss after T’Pring suggests they take time apart.
The prequel’s strength is that it adds complexity to the feelings established in TOS. In "The Naked Time," an infected Chapel confesses that she loves Spock and insists that, despite his discipline, he does have feelings. Later episodes continue to show her attachment, even though the original Star Trek never makes them a couple.
That bittersweet foreknowledge casts a long shadow over every breakthrough in SNW. Fans already know the future holds Roger Korby for Christine, making a neat, happily-ever-after virtually impossible.
That’s precisely why their connection is so captivating, it doesn't resolve Spock’s war between logic and emotion; it completely unravels it. Chapel makes him crave a feeling he can’t file away or rationalize, while Spock forces her to confront just how much of her heart she's willing to risk on a man who can never promise her certainty.
