A month has yet to pass since Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was canceled. However, social media remains a hot spot for so-called fans and trolls to voice their displeasure with a series many of them didn’t even bother to watch.
So, it’s wonderful that James T. Kirk himself, William Shatner, took to Instagram (below) and offered some sage advice for those with so little respect for SFA — or other shows for that matter. Shatner posted: “If you don’t like something, don’t watch it. Spend your time with what you enjoy. That’s always been the better choice. My best, Bill.”
The quote is an excerpt from a large piece Shatner felt compelled to post on social media, which addresses rumors that he had a “secret sit-down with Paramount/CBS regarding Star Trek or Starfleet Academy.” No, Shatner didn’t have any such meetings with the powers that be at Paramount Skydance and CBS Studios.
However, as a lifelong Trekkie who appreciates every iteration of Star Trek — with the exception of Captain Kirk’s death in Generations — I, too, wish Shatner met with Paramount to discuss his character’s return in a future Trek.
However, that’s simply not the reality here. And one self-proclaimed “writer” on Instagram, @valis_keogh, even had the temerity to respond to Shatner with the following babble [unedited for spelling and grammar issues]:
“what dissapoints ME MORE, is that you didn't go to bat for the franchise that put you on the map for 60 years to give the people putting the final nail in it's coffin that they have no idea what the show that you started is about. that story was the only one giving me any hope for any future for Star Trek. maybe you should rethink a meeting”
Wow.
Apparently, this Instagram user doesn’t realize Shatner expressed his “sorrow” over Starfleet Academy’s cancellation the very day the news broke on March 23. What does @valis_keogh really expect Shatner to do in this situation? Personally, this is simply another case of a so-called fan or internet troll with too much time on their hands. Like Shatner said, “If you don’t like something, don’t watch it.”
So, do you appreciate Shatner’s advice, or are you one of those who continue to whine even though Starfleet Academy has already been canceled? Share your thoughts and comments with us on the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages.
Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
