Caleb Mir is the crowned jewel of the show. He first appears as a six-year-old child who is separated from his mother. Following a 15-year time jump, it is clear that Mir’s childhood has defined and hardened him in the only way it could for a kid who grew up on his own.

Mir’s story instantly captivates the audience. His integration into the rules and regulations of Starfleet creates an internal clash. Mir clearly wants to belong to something, but he is clinging to a past that he knows was bad.

As a problem solver, Mir is brilliant, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Mir’s past will come back to bite him once or twice. Still, Mir is cultivating relationships with the other cadets, including Reymi, that will allow this show to reach its full potential. And it doesn't hurt that this young protagonist exhibits the brilliance of Wesley Crusher and the physicality of James T. Kirk.
