It’s understandable that Starfleet Academy will share continuity with Discovery, but fans are clearly cautious. The final seasons of Discovery received mixed feedback, with many feelings that Michael Burnham’s story eclipsed the ensemble dynamic. If Starfleet Academy includes Burnham, her presence should support the show, not overshadow it.

Burnham could serve as an occasional visiting lecturer or historical figure of reverence, much as Spock in The Next Generation's “Unification.” She doesn’t need another redemption arc or emotional breakdown. Instead, her wisdom and calm leadership could show how she’s grown, and how the cadets can, too.

Other Discovery characters might fare better if written with a lighter touch. A more balanced approach could blend the lore of the 32nd century with the hope and love that fans remember from the franchise's earlier years. Starfleet Academy should seem like a bridge, not a sequel. It should commemorate what came before while still looking ahead.
