Find out what the Star Trek icon thinks about the Khionian cadet’s penchant for puke.
Unfortunately, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s cool Khionian cadet Darem Reymi (George Hawkins) lacks the proper enzymes to handle certain foods and drinks, particularly when it comes to breaking down alcohol. As a result, whenever Darem tries to ingest something, he hilariously vomits glitter in the aftermath, and this reaction surprised Star Trek icon Jonathan Frakes.
Frakes, who directed SFA’s season 1 episode, “300th Night,” addressed Darem’s penchant for puke in an interview via TrekMovie.com by saying, “Yeah, they showed me the glitter vomit from the earlier episode. It seems absurd. And you know, it was minimal, but it was… It’s established. Glitter has been a runner with Noga Landau, who’s the showrunner with [Alex] Kurtzman.”
Darem ends up drinking some of Jay-Den’s (Karim Diane) concoction during the episode, as a way to celebrate joining the Klingon’s family. And, sure enough, when four of the cadets steal one of the USS Athena’s shuttlecrafts, Darem vomits glitter all over himself during the daring escape.
Frakes continued during the same sit-down by saying:
“She [Landau] wanted a lot of glitter in that opening sequence, where I have them walking down the hallway and slow-mo and fast-mo, and they’re about to start partying because they’re done with their school year. Yeah, she wanted a lot of glitter in there. I said, ‘Really? We’re gonna throw glitter in the hallways?’ So that became a… She ends all of her emails with me with the glitter.”
Honestly, I don’t mind the glitter puke. I think it's funny, but I do admit it’s a strange choice despite its creativity and Noga Landau’s apparent love for tiny shimmering decorations.
