Star Trek actor was 'intimidated' to join Starfleet Academy

Holly Hunter admits in her interview with LIVE with Kelly and Mark that she was “intimidated” to join Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but the Oscar winner says that fear faded once she focused on the role itself rather than the franchise’s six-decade legacy.

"I did feel intimidated," Hunter said. "I did feel intimidated to a real degree to come on to the show because it’s 60 years old this year. That’s crazy.” For Hunter, stepping into a universe with that much history was “amazing and daunting” at the same time, and she was acutely aware of how much Star Trek means to generations of fans. She made it clear she doesn’t consider herself a Trekkie, but she also doesn’t think you need to be one to enjoy what Starfleet Academy is doing.

Instead of getting lost in the pressure of the brand, Hunter says she grounded herself by remembering that, at the end of the day, she was there to play a part. “It’s a role, it’s a character,” she explained, and thinking of it that way helped her separate her job from the intimidating weight of the Star Trek legacy.
