Now that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is available on Paramount +, viewers can finally get to know the cast and characters we fans have been waiting for! Actor George Hawkins attended the show's world premiere in New York City, and he portrays one of the young Academy members who make up the group of untried cadets.
Hawkins' character, Darem Reymi, is a cadet from a wealthy family who aspires to have his own command one day. And the actor spoke about working with acting "titans" Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti in an interview on the blue carpet (via Etalk):
"Man, you know what, like, obviously, they are these titans and you have to have a lot of respect for what they've done. But as soon as you meet them, they're just people and they are so ready to collaborate. Both of them are so giving, so patient, so ready to share advice. They are the best people you could ask for, especially at the start of your career."
Hawkins continued by saying:
"Like, I came out of drama school two years ago, and um, we're doing this, and I get to call Paul Giamatti, Bob Picardo, Holly Hunter, friends. I get to, literally three weeks ago, I'm calling Holly crying, saying, 'I need your help.' And she's like, 'Come round, it's okay. What do you need?'"
It's clear that Hunter, who plays the commander of the USS Athena and chancellor of Starfleet Academy, Nahla Ake, is extending her role to assist and nurture the young actors who have little to no experience with television acting.
It's gratifying for fans like myself to know that the experienced actors are helping the younger cast members along, as relations behind the scenes can make or break a series that is still finding its feet.
