An anticipated story turn when Starfleet Academy began was how the living hologram SAM would look up to the EMH Doctor as an inspiration and possibly a mentor.

The Doctor, of course, wasn’t enthused about having this younger woman hanging around him, often infuriated by her incessant questions, and that non-friendship was the source of laughs with The Doctor trying to brush her off.

The relationship became more dramatic when SAM suffered mortal “glitching," which reminded The Doctor of his late holographic “daughter” from his days aboard the USS Voyager. The Doctor ended up helping reprogram SAM and spent the equivalent of 17 years raising her.

Robert Picardo clearly relished giving his all to this powerful scene, which made for one of the most emotional moments of the first year. That transformed this teacher-student relationship into a wonderful foster family, bonding them and showing that it’s never too late to grow a new clan.
